London has a rich tradition of clubs that are at once a home-from-home for members and forums for social interaction and the sharing of ideas. This project set out to create ‘the next generation’ of club for London, a place that is timeless and authentic in its respect for tradition, whilst being innovative and bold in its very modern spatial and material disposition.
The building is organised with a single function to each floor, each of which are defined by a single material: the ground floor arrival ‘forum’, terrazzo, the first floor ‘salon’ spaces, limestone, and so on. This dramatises the experience of moving through the club and affords each domain a unique atmosphere and sense of place. An open plan diagram challenges the room-to-room experience of a conventional club with a view to encouraging interconnection, and something altogether more civic.
